Many organizations (n.b., I don't know about the handbrake mirror) that offer binary downloads will also include a hash (like MD5 or SHA1). Are there any red flags here that would have clued a user in? I don't see any. I do my homework before installing things on my system, but these are both popular, legitimate applications that should pose no threat under normal circumstances. I don't want to rely 100% on the Mac App Store for my applications, given how limiting that can be. I have both HandBrake and Transmission installed (many years ago, fortunately). This concerns me, as it seems to be a difficult problem to avoid from an end user perspective. Yes, the mac users here on ARS are tech savvy, and realize this is not the case - but as with a wide multitude of topics users here are NOT representative of the overall population as whole.sadly. This is not an "old news" issue - many non-tech savvy mac owners are just as oblivious as grandma about malware, but unfortunately they feel that they are somehow protected inherently by owning the computer. I owned a mac long before most of my friends who have them were born. It's not clever anymore, so please move on? Most people on Ars have realized long ago (decades ?) that security through obscurity isn't a panacea, and once the OS isn't so obscure anymore, well.Įvery single time an article on mac malware is published, there's always at least this one guy going "but I thought macs were immune *snickers*". My bet is that this reaction is so cliche and old news, that it irks many. I very much doubt the downvotes are because of apple fanbois.

Posting this on a Heavily Pro Apple site is very brave Last time I watched an Apple commercial they told me I didn't have to worry about stuff like this.
